On this day 1 February 2018

Nuthatch

Had gone to do a bird count and there had been a photo of a Shoveler duck posted on Facebook .
Last year there had been a duck over wintering at Yeadon tarn.

On arriving to the pond I saw this....

I could not leave without asking what they were doing !

They had been commissioned by the local fisheries to do a fish count, they were going round with an electric hoop to stun the fish, catch them and count them. Turns out there were NO fish. Think they might have spotted one small Roach . The man on the bank was very worried about this
(a fisher man)   . We discuses the problem... there have been two Goosanders over wintering on the pond for the past few years and one Heron  is often about. These birds would have had quite a few fish but not all of them.

I did not visit the park/pond much last year but the previous years I remember large and small fish in huge shoals during the summer months.

Due to the boat all the birds had moved of the pond.

Bird list.
The weather was sunny but very cold, so many dogs too I did not spend to long today looking for birds.

  1. So what's happened to the fish? Do people fish the pond I wonder?

    1. To be honest they are not sure, they do fish on there but have to have a permit. They don't get many and put them back. Man did think someone might be taking them home to eat. Would not explain all the small fish though. Might be a combination of birds and stock been taken.

    2. It seems like somebody may be taking them doesn't it, for the lot to disappear it would take a lot of fishing by the birds!
